In the realm of game development, RPG Studio FX has been making significant strides, showcasing a series of updates that are bound to excite game designers and players alike. From February 4th to February 10th, 2024, the platform has rolled out a plethora of features, enhancements, and fixes, each contributing to a richer and more intuitive game development experience. Here’s a look at the progress I have made in development over the week.

What is RPG Studio FX?

RPG Studio FX, available now at, is a game development platform for making your own video games. It’s designed to democratize the process of creating video games. This platform empowers both novice and experienced developers with the tools and flexibility needed to bring their unique game visions to life. Here’s a closer look at what makes RPG Studio FX a game-changer in the world of game development.

Customization at Its Core

At the heart of RPG Studio FX is the great level of customization my platform is able to offer. Developers will soon, in one of the soon upcoming updates, be able to import their own chipsets and tiles, enabling the creation of truly unique game worlds. This feature is a cornerstone of the platform, ensuring that every game can have its own distinct aesthetic and feel.

Diverse Genre Support

RPG Studio FX transcends genre limitations, offering support for a wide array of 2D game types. Whether you’re passionate about crafting an intricate roguelike, an engaging RPG, or a fast-paced bullet hell game, RPG Studio FX provides the necessary tools and capabilities. This versatility opens up endless possibilities, encouraging developers to explore and innovate across genres.

Entity Addition and Scripting with RHAI

One of the platform’s standout features is its support for adding entities and scripting with RHAI (Rusty High-level Artificial Intelligence script). This is huge news since my last blog post. RHAI scripting introduces unparalleled flexibility in game design, allowing creators to dictate the behaviors, interactions, and logic governing the entities within their games. This scripting capability enables developers to implement complex game mechanics, interactive storytelling elements, and dynamic environments, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in 2D game development.

Infinite Flexibility

RPG Studio FX is built on the principle of infinite flexibility. The platform’s intuitive interface, combined with powerful scripting and customization options, ensures that developers are limited only by their imagination. From the physics of the game world to the narrative arcs and character development, everything can be tailored to the developer’s vision.

In summary, RPG Studio FX emerges as a potent and accessible platform for game development. Its commitment to customization, support for a wide range of genres, and advanced scripting capabilities make it an ideal choice for developers looking to create bespoke 2D games. Whether you’re a seasoned game designer or someone looking to take their first steps into game development, RPG Studio FX offers the tools and flexibility needed to bring your gaming dreams to life.

February 10, 2024 — Uploading and Customization Enhancements

To kick off, RPG Studio FX introduced the capability for developers to upload their games directly to the server, simplifying the process of game sharing and testing. Accompanying this update is the new feature allowing the specification of games to play via appending a #game_id to the website's URL, enhancing user navigation and game selection. Minor updates were also made to the starting editor's look and feel, alongside the added flexibility to edit game names, descriptions, and other details, empowering creators with greater control over their game's presentation.

February 9, 2024 — Interactions and Entity Editor Enhancements

The focus then shifted towards interaction, with the implementation of interface panels for Interactions. This feature enables the addition of diverse interaction scripts with entities, further enriching the game’s interactive elements. Additionally, the entity editor tool received an update; clicking an entity now brings up its panel even if the entity panel isn’t open, streamlining the editing process.

February 8, 2024 — Scripting Capabilities with RHAIScript

A landmark update was the integration of RHAIScript into the engine. This scripting language opens up new possibilities for game designers to control entities dynamically. Initially, two functions, speak(entity, string) and speak_any(entity, [strings]), are available, with promises of expanding to hundreds more, like move_to(entity,x,y), enhancing the depth of game mechanics and interactions.

February 7, 2024 — Workspace Innovations and Fixes

Significant progress was made with the introduction of buttons for switching workspaces between World, Chipset, Item, and Entity. This update, alongside fixes to animations and the classification of spawner types, marks a step forward in the usability and functionality of the platform. The day also saw essential refactoring, laying the groundwork for future feature implementations, including the importation of custom Entities, Items, Scripts, and Chipsets.

February 6, 2024 — Animation and Behavior Enhancements

Updates on this day included the addition of an “animation_speed” field to every layer, allowing for varied animation speeds. New behaviors, GetAttention and WanderArea, were implemented, improving entity interaction. Additionally, improvements were made to layer rendering, collision detection, and entity spawn positions, enhancing the overall game playability and visual presentation.

February 4, 2024 — Pathfinding and Mobile Compatibility

The week started strong with the implementation of pathfinding algorithms for monsters and creatures, alongside the introduction of a click-to-move feature, marking a significant improvement in navigation and mobile compatibility. These updates not only showcase RPG Studio FX’s commitment to enhancing the platform but also highlight the potential for a more immersive and accessible gaming experience.

RPG Studio FX continues to evolve, with each update bringing us closer to a more dynamic and user-friendly platform for game development. Stay tuned for more developments as RPG Studio FX carves out a significant place in the game development world.
