For many gamers, the gift of their first gaming console holds a special place in their hearts, marking the beginning of a lifelong love affair with the digital realms. In my case, that transformative moment came one fateful Christmas when I unwrapped a Sega CDX system, accompanied by the iconic blue blur himself, Sonic the Hedgehog. Little did I know that this extraordinary gift would spark a passion that would shape my gaming journey and create cherished memories for years to come.
As I tore open the wrapping paper that Christmas morning, I could hardly contain my excitement. The Sega CDX system, a compact and sleek console that combined the power of the Sega Genesis and Sega CD, promised to transport me to a world of gaming magic. Its arrival heralded a new era of gaming for me, with enhanced graphics, immersive soundtracks, and cinematic experiences that pushed the boundaries of what I thought was possible. It was freaking AMAZING.
In fact, I actually cried when I got it because my parents gave me the video games BEFORE they gave me the system. I wandered, “how would I ever play this!”. I even posited maybe using the CD player stereo system and finding out how to hook it up to the TV to play the games. I, being like 7 years old, just knew it was possible! (It wasn’t).
Thankfully the next gift was the system and I was overjoyed. I had never been so happy. And then I spent countless hours perfecting my fine motor skills as I becamse Sonic the Hedgehog collecting coins and rings.
I imagine gaming has brought similar joy to so many other people, and that’s why I’m so proud to have so much video gaming, tabletop gaming, and roleplaying games at this year’s Anime Midwest convention. The three day experience of making friends and playing video games together is just an incredible time and a good memory for so many people.
