What does Japan have to do with anime anyway?

Japan’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant entertainment industry have played a significant role in shaping the world of anime. With its unique blend of traditional and modern elements, Japan has become synonymous with this beloved form of animation. Let’s delve into the deep-rooted connection between Japan and anime, exploring various anime series that are set within the country itself.

“Your Name” (Kimi no Na wa):
Set in various locations across Japan, including Tokyo and Hida City in Gifu Prefecture, “Your Name” follows the story of two high school students who mysteriously swap bodies. This critically acclaimed film beautifully captures the essence of Japanese landscapes, from bustling cityscapes to serene rural areas.

“Spirited Away” (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi):
Directed by the renowned Hayao Miyazaki, “Spirited Away” is set in the magical world of Japanese folklore. The story takes place in a bathhouse located in a parallel spirit realm, heavily influenced by traditional Japanese settings such as hot springs (onsen) and enchanting forests.

“Haikyuu!!”:
This popular sports anime revolves around a high school volleyball team located in Karasuno, a fictional town inspired by the real-life city of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture. The series showcases the passion for sports deeply ingrained in Japanese culture, as well as the scenic beauty of the region.

“Tokyo Ghoul”:
As the name suggests, “Tokyo Ghoul” is set in modern-day Tokyo. The series unfolds in a world where flesh-eating ghouls coexist with humans, often lurking in the shadows of the city’s bustling streets. It vividly portrays Tokyo’s urban landscape, including iconic landmarks like the Tokyo Tower and the Akihabara district.

“The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu):
Taking place in Nishinomiya, a city in Hyogo Prefecture, “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” tells the story of a high school girl with god-like powers who unwittingly attracts supernatural beings to her. The anime seamlessly incorporates real locations from Nishinomiya, adding authenticity to the narrative.

“Great Teacher Onizuka” (GTO):
Set in the fictional town of Shonan, “Great Teacher Onizuka” follows the story of a former gang member turned teacher who aims to connect with his students through unorthodox methods. Shonan draws inspiration from the actual Shonan area, known for its beaches and youthful culture.

“Yuri!!! on Ice”:
This sports anime centers around figure skating and is primarily set in various locations across Japan. The series features iconic locations like the Ice Castle Skating Rink in Karuizawa and the Hasetsu Castle in Kyushu, providing a visually stunning portrayal of the country’s diverse landscapes.

These are just a few examples of anime that showcase Japan’s influence on the genre. Through intricate storytelling, attention to detail, and immersive visuals, these series bring to life the essence of Japan’s culture, landscapes, and urban environments, making the connection between Japan and anime truly inseparable.

Japan is more than just anime too!

When exploring Japan, indulging in a steaming bowl of ramen noodles is an experience that should not be missed. Ramen holds a special place in Japanese cuisine, and its popularity has been further amplified by its appearances in anime, such as the beloved series Naruto. These cheap, delicious, and filling meals can be found all over Tokyo, making them a go-to choice for locals and visitors alike. In fact, ramen noodles are a perfect late-night snack after a fun evening out.

While traditional ramen may differ from the visually striking Gomaryu spicy ramen mentioned above, it remains a staple in Japan’s culinary landscape. Most Japanese ramen is crafted with a pork-broth base, rich in succulent flavors achieved by meticulously marinating pork bones in the broth for hours on end. This meticulous process often starts early in the morning or even the night prior to ensure the broth reaches its peak umami taste. Once prepared, the broth is served throughout the day, infusing the ramen with its distinct and satisfying flavor.

For those seeking the best ramen experience in Tokyo, the city offers an array of exceptional ramen shops. But how is ramen related to the convention too?

Well Anime Midwest has an unlimited ConSweet filled with instant ramen. That’s like cup noodles or maruchan or top ramen, depending on the brands available. So anime fans can enjoy the taste of ramen right at the convention — and admission to the ConSweet is free and included with all admission passes.

Ramen is also a favorite food of Naruto.

Anime Midwest is one of the best places for anime fans to enjoy an experience from Japan. The convention will be held July 7–9, 2023 at the Hyatt Regency O’hare and Donald E. Stephens Convention Center.
